How Much Grain Spawn to Use

Master’s Mix can be successfully inoculated using a spawn-to-substrate ratio anywhere between 1:3 (for fast colonization and maximum contamination resistance) and 1:20 (to stretch your spawn as far as possible):

Pro Tip: We recommend a 1:3 to 1:5 ratio (~1 lb to 1.7 lbs of spawn per 5 lb bag) for beginner growers to ensure rapid colonization and outrun potential contaminants.

Best Practices for Growing Success

1. Work Clean: Clean your hands, gloves, and workspace thoroughly with 70% isopropyl alcohol before opening your substrate or grain spawn bags.
2. Inoculate: In a clean room, Still Air Box (SAB), or in front of a Laminar Flow Hood, open the bag and break up your fully colonized grain spawn. Pour the spawn into the substrate bag.
3. Mix Well: Reseal the bag (using an impulse sealer, zip tie, or heavy tape) and thoroughly mix the grain spawn throughout the substrate so colonization happens evenly.
4. Incubate: Store the bag in a dark, clean area at room temperature (68°F–75°F / 20°C–24°C) until fully white and colonized.
5. Fruit: Cut slits or an "X" in the bag to expose to fruiting conditions (high humidity and fresh air exchange).

Storage Instructions

• Best Used Fresh: For optimal performance, use your Master’s Mix within 2 to 4 weeks of delivery.
• Short-Term Storage: Keep uninoculated bags in a cool, dark, and dry room away from direct sunlight and dust.
• Long-Term Storage: If you need to store your bags for longer than 3 weeks before use, keep them in the refrigerator (35°F–40°F) to maintain freshness and prevent premature breakdown. Allow the bag to reach room temperature before inoculating.
