The ePapillon offers many advantages over conventional lighting systems. Simply put, it uses the same amount of power to produce more light. This is achieved by combining a superior reflector (95% efficiency) with the incredibly bright dual-ended Ushio AHS-DE Pro Plus 1000w lamp and an advanced, ultra-high frequency ballast, all designed from the ground up by Philips Lighting. The result is the highest PAR output per watt of any HID lighting system on the market today.
"But how does this save me money" you might ask? Let's start with the lamp...
The light produced by all traditional (mogul-based) HPS lamps degrades over time, and it happens quicker than you might think. In our own testing, we noticed significant drops in yield after only 6 months of use (running at 12 hours per day). And don't just take our word for it. We have a number of customers who have been growing for many years and operate their grow rooms like a factory crossed with a laboratory. No variable has been overlooked, resulting in conditions (temperature, humidity, CO2 levels, nutrient levels, etc.) that are exactly the same each and every crop. This results in crops and yields that are almost exactly the same each run, and these growers have also found that their yields fall short after 6 months if they do not replace their traditional HPS lamps. This is due to the fact that light intensity and quality start to diminish after only a couple weeks of use. It continues to diminish over the next several months, resulting in significantly lower light levels than when the lamp was new.
The Ushio Pro Plus 1000w HPS double ended lamp starts with the highest PAR output in the industry (2100 micromol/s) and over it's 10,000 hour lifespan (that's over two years at 12 hours per day) it only degrades 5%! Another advantage of the Ushio Pro Plus lamp comes from the fact that it is double ended. Traditional single ended lamps utilize a wire frame that spans the length of the lamp. The wire frame is necessary in order to carry the weight of the arc tube (the cigar shaped piece in the center of the lamp that produces light) while keeping it centered in the glass envelope. This wire shades part of the light that is produced by the arc tube, resulting in less light output and uniformity. The Ushio lamp circumvents the need for a wire frame and so none of the light produced by the arc tube is impeded.
NOTE: Since it's initial introduction, Philips is now including the Ushio Pro Plus DE lamp in place of the Green Power Plus. Don't worry, most customers we polled liked the Ushio at least as much as the Philips. In fact, we noticed slightly higher PAR readings with the Ushio lamp over the Philips lamp during our own in-house testing.
Next, the reflector...
The patented reflector included with the Philips ePapillon 1000W has a yield of 95% (certified by the British Standardization Institute). The lux values achieved by this reflector is as much as 10% higher than comparable lighting systems, resulting in more PAR light to the plant canopy. Don't let its small size fool you; this reflector casts a wider and brighter light distribution pattern than any other reflector we've seen.
The reflector utilizes Open Reflector Functionality, which directs more light on the canopy while trapping considerably less heat; heat is allowed to rise away from the canopy more efficiently than other reflectors that trap the heat, resulting in higher temps in the plant canopy. This has the added benefit of increasing the efficiency of your HVAC system. Here's why...
In a residential or commercial setting, the thermostat that controls the air-conditioner is normally mounted on a wall somewhere. In a grow room, however, the thermostat is normally hung somewhere in the plant canopy. This is due to the fact that the temperature in the canopy/under the lights is going to be much higher than the temperature in the aisles or along the perimeter of the room. So if we mounted the thermostat on the wall and set it for 78 degrees, it's not uncommon to see temperatures of 85 degrees or even higher in the plant canopy. So instead we hang the thermostat in the canopy to achieve the 78 degrees we are looking for around the plants. However, the rest of the room is now closer to 70 degrees; in essence, we are running our A/C at 70 degrees, not 78, increasing the workload put on the compressor, shortening its lifespan, and consuming more energy. Because of the unique design of the Philips reflector, much of the heat flows through the reflector and into the rest of the room, resulting in lower canopy temperatures and a more even temperature throughout the room (reducing the 70-78 degree temperature differential). In essence your A/C will now be cooling somewhere closer to 74 degrees instead of 70 degrees. Make sense? Well, we're not done yet...
Most growers don't realize it but the reflective interior of most reflectors deteriorates over time, typically 5% or more each year. Using a completely different production process, the high density Vega aluminum used in the ePapillon reflector has an annual depreciation of only 1%. In addition, the reflective insert can easily be removed and either cleaned or replaced with a brand new insert for around $40. The reflector is designed to reduce the heating up of the lamp to the minimum possible extent. As a result, there is an even lower drop in the light output of the lamp during the course of its life. The ePapillon uses a safety cover that provides a thermal buffer between the hot reflector material and any objects that it may come in contact with. The protective cover reduces the surface heat from 390 degrees down to 122 degrees.
In short, the ePapillon reflector produces more light, a broader beam of growth light that penetrates deeper into the plant and lower lamp luminosity rate, thanks to a relatively low reflector temperature. On to the ballast...
The ePapillon ballast is smaller, lighter and runs cooler than regular ballasts, even when compared to other high-efficiency electronic ballasts. The ballast hangs vertically, allowing the cooling fins to dissipate the heat more efficiently to keep the ballast as cool as possible. Because the ballast is connected to the reflector housing and socket assemblies directly, there is no need for a lamp cord, which virtually eliminates the RF interference inherent in other digital ballasts. The 400V ultra high frequency ballast is designed to run the Ushio Pro Plus 1000w lamp; conventional digital ballasts will not work with high performance double ended lamps. The ballast has a dial that is adjustable to 600/660/750/825/1000/1000W. The wattage can be changed while the lamp is running - it will slowly increase or decrease to the desired setting over a period of 5 minutes or so - and all wattages are attainable using the single Ushio lamp that comes with the system (no need to change out the lamp to match the wattage).
In case you're still not convinced, we've saved the best for last.
Most of our customers are accustomed to using two 1000w lighting systems over each 4' x 8' tray, or four 1000w systems over two trays. The Philips ePapillon 1000w system is so bright and so efficient that you will be able to achieve the same results with only three fixtures over two 4' x 8' trays!
