This is absolutely one of the best double ended reflectors money can buy. Reflectors like the ones used in the Gavita and ePapillon are designed for greenhouse use, where they are used to only supplement natural sunlight by increasing the number of hours of light the plants receive. Reflectors like the DE Boss are designed for indoor use, where they are used as the only source of light. Systems like the Gavita utilize very small reflectors which produce a very narrow cone of light. The reason for this is that they are mounted very high above the canopy (usually 8' or more); at this height, the narrow cone is at it's widest so it is able to cover a large area. The other reason for the tiny reflector is that since these lights are only on for a very small number of hours each year, they don't want a big grow room-style reflector blocking all the natural sunlight during long periods of time the lights are turned off.
These greenhouse fixtures also have the ballast attached to the reflector. The reason for this has to do with installation. When you're installing thousands of fixtures in large greenhouse structures you want a compact system that you simply have to hook onto the supporting structure and plug into an outlet box. Having to deal with a remote ballast and lamp cord would add significant time and labor costs and would serve no purpose since it's impossible to locate the ballasts outside these massive structures (there is a limit to how far the ballast can be from the reflector without misfiring the lamp). In a grow room we want the exact opposite. We want the ballast (if possible) to be located outside the grow room because it produces a significant amount of heat that would increase the amount of HVAC equipment necessary to cool the room, as well as increasing the monthly electric bill. This is why most experienced growers choose DE lighting systems that utilize remote ballasts, and reflectors that are designed for the purpose they are actually using them for.
A word of caution, however. The DE Boss produces so much plant usable light that they must be mounted at least 3-5 feet from the top of the canopy, so they should only be used in rooms that have high ceilings. We do not recommend using them in rooms with 8' ceilings, even if the plants will be placed on the floor, unless the plants are not going to get above 2' in height. But if you are in a warehouse with 10' or higher ceilings, then this is the reflector for you. When mounted high above the canopy these reflectors will cover an area approximately 4' wide by at least 5' or more long. Forget all the hype and marketing regarding greenhouse-style lighting systems. If you are a serious or commercial grower, get the equipment that is going to get the job done in the most efficient manner possible.
